Love

This topic has been weighing on my heart and mind for a while now. Marriage. Marriage is hard enough in itself, but man, who knew adding little people into the family would make things so much harder. Well, actually lots of people knew, I just refused to believe that my marriage would be rocked because of kids.

After spending a whole day with the girls, cooking, cleaning, getting around to helping everyone out and having conversations with my two year old, you would think that all I want to do is curl up with my husband and have a great conversation. With an adult! But honestly, it's one of the hard parts of staying home that I didn't realize would happen. Most of the time, all I want to do is just sit, and be silent. I think that now we have kids it's kind of so easy for us to not talk to each other. It's not that we hate each other now, it's just that we've both been doing our own thing all day, with kids and work and other people, and we haven't had a chance for any solo time!

Then, I feel like everything revolves around the children now days. We're either playing with the kids, talking to them, reading with them, disciplining them, feeding them, bathing them, or just talking about them when they go to sleep. Who knew two little people would take up so much of your lives.

There's also the parenting styles. Jason has his way of doing things and so do it. Sometimes it's just hard to remember that we are more than just parents. We are one, we are together, and husband and wife first. Yes, we will parent the children different ways, but I have to tell myself that that shouldn't get in the way of Jason and I as husband and wife.

I don't really want to just dwell on the bad parts of marriage, but I'd rather share things we've been doing to reconnect as married people. This has become something I've realized is incredibly important, because we are the examples for what our daughters see for a marriage. I want to be a good example of what a respectful wife should look like, which is one thing I've been focusing on in my life.

So here are somethings we've been doing lately to reconnect.

1. Date!

It's funny that even as a stay at home mom, it's hard to leave my kids behind to go on a date with the Husband. I just miss them so much! But honestly, it feels good to go out with Jason and get to be "us" for a while without the little ones. One of my favorite date nights we've been on so far is one we had while we were in Ohio. We've been wanting to do a restaurant crawl for a while, and we finally did it. Normally, it would be that you go to a restaurant for a drink, then another for appetizers, then another for your main course, and another for desert. We went to a little historical town in Ohio and it was so much fun going to all the different places on the old timey feel street.

2. Love Languages

During our pre-marriage counseling, we had done a little questionnaire to find out what our love languages were. Jason had saved the paperwork and we went back over them about a month ago. It's interesting to see how they have changed since we've had kids. I found this app for the Love Languages and we both did the quiz on there and started a challenge they include. It gives you a weekly task to do for your spouse as well as some "Conversation Starters". They are both really cool.  The conversation starters are usually things we've never talked about! It's been really great having that to reconnect with each other.
3. "I love you because..." board

We started this a couple months back. There's a white board in our laundry room, so we pass it several times a day when we go to the garage, or do laundry, or go to the trash. When we think of things to point out to the other, we write it up there. Obviously, we could just tell each other, but there's something about taking the time to write it on the board and reading it that makes it special.
4. Date Night at home

We put date night ideas together and wrote them on a piece of paper and threw them in a jar. So from time to time, we will pull one out when the kids go to sleep.
All of this is easier said than done. Half of the battles is carving time and effort out to do it. But I hope maybe one of things could be a piece of encouragement to someone out there.

Tot School

It's been a while. There have been some subjects I've wanted to blog on to get off my chest, but tonight I wanted to share something I've started doing with Sara since I've stayed at home this year. Backstory, I had started a little "Calendar Board" time with her that only lasted maybe a month... and for the past couple months I've kinda felt like a mess of a mom. Don't get me wrong, I've done things with the girls, but I guess I wanted some sort of structured learning again. I came across this "Tot School" and LOVED their ideas. And since every teacher knows it's best to just steal other people's ideas, I have been going through and doing old weeks so I don't have to make anything up. And, if you know me... I love planning and structure. So it's GREAT!

So, here's the site: letstotschool.com Basically, they have put together a year worth of "themed" weeks of learning. They'll give a book, bible verse, and activities to go with it each week. It take a little bit of planning, but it's not to terrible and the activities are only like 10-15 minutes a day.

We started with "Feelings". A lot of the things we did that week had to do with the movie Inside Out! And lucky for us, the book was "Pout Pout Fish" which we actually had. YAY! We love that book, especially me because I'm a really human life Pout Pout Fish. haha Then we made a paperbag pout pout fish and Sara painted it.
I also got this cool new calendar board thing on sale during Christmas and we've been doing this each day (or every other day... oops).

The two things we did were my favorite. First, we did some sorting. I got Sara those sorting bears, And put the Inside Out emotions on each of them. I would make noises and faces when she'd put a bear in the cup and when I did Anger, she was scared... soooo she refused to put any red bears in the cup. It was kind of entertaining for me... haha

Jordyn even got a turn with the bears!
The next really fun activity we did was make these little play-doe stressballs. I found this recipe to make the play-doe and we added some essential oils to the play-doe (how ever so hippy of me) to make them smell.
The art project we did this week was painting with a textured ball. And Sara likes to glue... so we cut out fins and eyes and she went crazy with the glue. The face she's making below is her "sad face".

Our Feelings and Emotions week was a big hit! We worked on patterns last week and I'm hoping that I won't give up on this in the weeks to come because it really is worth it to see how much she learns. And it makes me feel like I'm using my time at home wisely and making a difference in the world even if it's just my one kid instead of a classroom full. And I just wanted to share all this because it's a great idea and great ideas should be shared. :)

Two Year Old Sara

Oh little two year old... I just can't believe she's 2 already, but then she throws a fit about sitting in the chair for dinner or because she can't have the iPad and then I remember, yep... she's a two year old. haha She's like a Sour Patch Kid. First she's sour..... then she's sweet!

Here's some Sara Stats:

Some Firsts
She got her first haircut. It was starting to turn into a party in the back! So Aunt Mitchi had the honor of cutting it for the first time. Sara cried. I'm not quite sure why, I guess just the unfamiliarity of it all.
At Disneyland she rode her first roller-coaster this year. If you watch the video she looks terrified, but she keeps talking about it all the time.
She's been sleeping in her toddler bed like a champ! She picked out her Monsters bed spread and just loves it.

Dislikes
Spiders and bugs
Being told "no"
Not getting her way
Sitting at the table for meals
When Jordyn lays next to her and tickles her or tries to get her things.
Pulling into church (sad... haha but when she gets into nursery she gets happy after a couple minutes)
Listening to Mama's requests at times.

November 20, 2015
Since I am able to stay at home right now, I wanted to make her birthday fun and special, since I get to!

First, she woke up to balloons all over her room.

Breakfast was a plate full of sprinkle pancakes, eggs, and raspberries. Oh and "Princess Milk", which was just pink milk.

We opened some presents.

Then we took a trip to her favorite part where she insisted on Jordyn swinging with her.

Next up was a lunch date with Daddy at the bowling ally! They have new dinosaur bowling ball ramps so it was super cool!

She helped me bake her birthday cupcakes.

Then we made some of her favorite food. BBQ chicken legs, beans and corn! I guess it's those Ohio roots! haha
Sad to say, our poor birthday girl ended up spending the evening of her birthday with a high fever. Poor girl. She went to bed early with a 103 degree temperature. So sad. This morning she is ready to go and can't wait for her Monster party tonight!!!
